Lyme disease is a complex and serious illness that can cause severe health problems if not caught and treated early. Initially discovered more than 30 years ago in Lyme, Connecticut, Lyme disease is quickly becoming the untreated epidemic of the 21st century, as patients around the world struggle to find a “Lyme-literate” medical doctor (LLMD) who can help them regain their health.
What is Lyme Disease?
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by a spirochete, or corkscrew-shaped bacteria, called Borrelia burgdorferi. The disease affects multiple systems of the body, with symptoms appearing within one to two weeks after an infected bite.
Symptoms of Lyme Disease
Lyme disease is a complex disease that can affect multiple body systems. In its early stages, patients may experience flu-like systems, including chills, fever, swollen lymph nodes, headaches, muscle aches, joint pain, fatigue, and a stiff neck. As the disease progresses, patients may develop nerve problems, arthritis, neurological issues, and more.
Finding a Lyme-Literate Doctor
Because Lyme can be such a difficult disease to diagnose and treat, your primary care physician may not be the best option. When searching for an LLMD, try to find a provider that is knowledgeable about Lyme disease and has experience treating and helping a large number of Lyme disease patients.
